What is an Opinion?
An opinion is a belief, judgment, or way of thinking about something. In our diverse world, people hold many different beliefs and customs, leading to a wide range of opinions. Some opinions are positive, while others may not align with Christian values. Therefore, do should not be guided by worldly opinions.

As Christians, we often face the challenge of navigating worldly opinions that may conflict with God’s teachings. These opinions can be societal norms or enticing shortcuts that seem appealing but lead to sin. It’s crucial to recognize that worldly opinions often stand in opposition to God’s will. Without careful discernment, we may find ourselves conforming to the views and patterns of this world. Therefore, we must guard our hearts and minds against the influence of worldly opinions.
The Bible advises in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Why we should not be guided by Worldly opinions
1. They Often Contradict God’s Commands
Worldly opinions frequently conflict with God’s teachings, leading us into sin. For example, practices like premarital sex, homosexuality and corruption are increasingly normalized and even celebrated in society. However, what does God say about these practices?
According to worldly views, accumulating wealth is a major priority, often justifying unethical means to achieve it. But God’s word teaches us to prioritize spiritual wealth and righteousness over material gain. Similarly, while the world may promote loving only those who love us, Jesus teaches us to love even our enemies.
2. People’s Opinions Are Subject to Change
People’s opinions can change rapidly. Someone who praises you today might criticize you tomorrow, and vice versa. The same individuals who encourage sinful behaviors may later condemn you when those actions lead to negative consequences.
For instance, Paul experienced a rapid change in people’s opinions in Acts 28:4-6. After surviving a shipwreck and a snakebite, the locals first thought he was a murderer. However, when nothing happened to him, they changed their minds and called him a god. This illustrates how quickly opinions can shift and why we should not base our lives or decisions on them. Instead, we should be guided by God’s unchanging truth, as stated in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
3. Opinions Influenced by the Devil
Even well-meaning loved ones can be influenced by the devil, leading them to offer advice that contradicts God’s will. In Matthew 16:22-23, Peter tried to dissuade Jesus from His path of suffering. Jesus recognized the influence behind Peter’s words and rebuked Satan, not Peter, because He understood the true source of the opinion.
Therefore, we must always discern the origin of opinions, whether they align with God’s Word or come from the enemy. We should consistently seek guidance from the Holy Spirit and adhere to biblical teachings.
